As a new parent, there is likely nothing you want more than to keep your baby feeling happy, healthy, and peaceful. Unfortunately, when you have a fussy baby, it can seem like those simple wishes are impossible to achieve. Luckily, at Ocean Pediatrics, we’re here to help you do just that. Keep reading for our pediatrician-approved tips on how to soothe a fussy baby like a pro!
Touch
Sometimes your baby’s needs are simple! They just want to be held by their favorite person. So, try pulling your baby into your arms and giving them a sweet embrace while rubbing them gently on the back. If your baby is feeling emotionally distressed, it can be especially helpful to offer them the closeness of skin to skin contact. Baby massage can also work wonders to soothe those emotions and work gas bubbles out of their system at the same time!
Swaddle
At first, the world outside the womb can seem a little scary or overwhelming for little ones. One great way to help them feel more comfortable is to help them feel like they are protected by mama’s womb. To simulate this safe environment, wrap your baby safely in a swaddling blanket. It’s essential to use the right technique here, so don’t hesitate to ask your pediatrician for help achieving the perfect, safe swaddle for your baby.
Motion
Just like swaddling, certain motions can remind babies of the womb, too! You can take your baby for a walk with a stroller or a body carrier. Another great option is to hold them while sitting in a rocking chair, or sit them in a baby bouncer or baby swing so they can gently move back and forth in a relaxing and steady motion. The key is to try different methods and movements, like bouncing or swaying, and be patient while you find what works for you.
Noise
The right noises can also – you guessed it – remind babies of the safe feeling of being in mom’s womb! Many fussy babies feel comforted by white noise, gentle humming, or the sound of a heartbeat. You can also try singing to your little one or playing calming music. We recommend trying a few different sounds and seeing what calms your baby the best.
Temperature
Just like you, your little one can get chilly or overheated! But without the words to explain how they are feeling, it can be difficult to tell. A great rule of thumb is to dress your baby in a similar amount of clothing as you are wearing to make sure that they feel comfortable. Keep in mind that if they are sitting still and you are moving around, you might be feeling a little warmer than they are.
