As Southern California natives, we know the importance of our beloved beaches. To us, beach days aren’t just for the summertime, they’re a part of our everyday lives here in Orange County. From splashing in the waves, building sand castles and basking in the sun — it’s an almost daily necessity for our families. So as Orange County’s most trusted pediatric care provider, all of us at Ocean Pediatrics are here to help you keep your little ones safe, happy, and healthy.
So before you pack your beach bag and hit the sand, check out our list of pediatrician-approved beach safety tips for kids of all ages!
Start with the basics: sunscreen, hydration, and supervision
Before your child’s toes hit the sand, make sure you’ve covered the essentials:
- Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 30—reapply every 2 hours and after swimming.
- Pack plenty of water and encourage frequent hydration breaks.
- Always supervise children closely near water, even in shallow areas.
Water safety at the beach: know the conditions
The ocean is unpredictable, and even strong swimmers can get caught off guard. Keep your kids safe with these water safety tips:
- Check the surf report and obey lifeguard flags and signs.
- Educate kids about rip currents — and teach older children how to “float, don’t fight” if caught in one.
- For younger children or inexperienced swimmers, use Coast Guard-approved flotation devices.
Dress smart: protective clothing and footwear
Sun-protective swimwear, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses offer added defense against sunburn and heat exhaustion. Don’t forget water shoes to protect tiny feet from hot sand, sharp shells, and hidden debris.
Create a safe setup: shade, boundaries, and check-Ins
Set up your beach spot with safety in mind. You’ll want to use large beach umbrellas or pop-up tents for shade. Then, make sure to establish clear boundaries for where your child can and cannot play. Lastly, remember to do regular check-ins — kids can wander or get disoriented, especially during peak hours with large crowds.
Plan for the unexpected
Keep a well-stocked beach bag with first-aid essentials, including adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and aloe vera for sunburn relief. And always know where the nearest lifeguard station is located.
