As leaves change and temperatures drop, another seasonal shift begins: the rise in viruses like influenza and RSV. Fall is a crucial time to strengthen your child’s immunity — and vaccines are one of the most effective ways to do just that.

Here’s a deeper look into why you should get your children vaccinated this holiday season, to protect their health, and the health of your community.

Why seasonal vaccines are essential

Children’s immune systems are still developing, making them especially vulnerable to seasonal illnesses. The flu can lead to serious complications for kids, especially those under five or with underlying conditions. And with viruses often spreading in schools and playgroups, protection becomes a shared responsibility.

Vaccines not only reduce the severity of illness, but also lower the chance of transmission — helping to protect vulnerable members of your community and easing the burden on local healthcare systems.

What fall vaccines should you prioritize?

This season, we recommend families stay current on the following vaccines:

  • Flu: Recommended annually for everyone 6 months and older, especially important during peak flu season (October–March).
  • COVID-19 (and boosters): Updated boosters are available to better match circulating variants.
  • RSV: Both nirsevimab or clesrovimab are long-acting monoclonal antibody immunizations that protect against RSV disease in infants and young children.
  • Other catch-up vaccines: Fall is a great time to review your child’s vaccine schedule and address any gaps in protection, such as MMR, DTaP, or meningococcal vaccines.
